Volunteering
There are several ways that you can help Home-Start Cyprus WSBA in a voluntary capacity:
- by supporting a family as a home-visiting volunteer
- by helping with fundraising
- by supporting events
Home Visiting Volunteers
Home-Start Cyprus WSBA’s home-visiting volunteers come from many different backgrounds and vary in age but all are either parents themselves or have parenting experience and are carefully selected for their friendliness and understanding. All volunteers attend a preparation course before being matched with a family. They then take their own individual skills and experience to the families they visit. Our volunteers offer their time and friendship and accept a parent as they are.
“I wanted to volunteer with Home-Start as I feel its a way of giving back to the military community. Good things happen when people step up and make a difference; that’s what Home-Start does! Being part of that difference is really rewarding. What may seem like small acts of kindness can go a really long way.”
“After giving birth to my first child in Cyprus, I discovered Home-Start when my baby was about 7 weeks. Without the support from Home-Start I do not know where I would be. I was given a volunteer who I could meet up with, and I was involved in groups at the Centre, this service helped me feel less isolated and alone when being a new mum. An excellent and much needed service that is part of the community. Thank you all at Home-Start for everything that you have done, really appreciate all your support, you do a fantastic job.”
“Being a Home-Start Volunteer gives me a feeling of satisfaction, achievement and fulfilment knowing that I am supporting families in times of need. Helping them to build their self-esteem and confidence to gain the skills needed to enable them to manage parenting challenges successfully and settle into military life on the island
Wanting to volunteer stemmed from previously working with families and young people in the UK and I wanted to use my skill set to help others.
Highlights for me have been Winter Wonderland, seeing all the children enjoying the event and making the most of the activities on offer. I also enjoy our volunteer social get-togethers, as this gives everyone chance to have a catch up and have a good natter!”
